TRANSLATION TRANSFORMATIONS IN A MULTICULTURAL TEXT

Abstract

The paper investigates the figurative, semantic and proverbial corpus of L. Carroll’s fairy tale as a precedent phenomenon in the field of inter-Slavic linguocultural reflections. The search of typological and quantitative parameters of modeling interlanguage correlates with regard to the form, content and motivation of idioms, proverbs, sayings, similes, allusions, discursive signs, their structural and semantic models (invariant and variant ethnocultural gestalts and transformations), cognitive and assessment peculiarities in several conceptual target models of the world is carried out. The particular attention is paid to the identification of “areas of semantic and emotional tension of the author’s tale” that are reflected in various verbal-communicative acts (warnings, curses, threats or oaths) and semiosis of related cultural artefacts, things and objects.To solve the above problems a research parallel mini-corpus of the “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” text was concluded. It included nine texts, aligned in paragraphs: the source text, Ukrainian translations by H. Bushyna, V. Kornienko (two versions 2001 and 2007), V. Panchenko, Polish translation by V. Gołębiewska, two translation solutions in Russian by A. Rozhdestvenskaya and N. Demurova, and Czech translation by J. Císař. The review of translation transformations at the lexical, phraseological and grammatical level is aimed at clarifying which ethnic symbols, invariant motifs and cultural referents (cognitemes, linguoculturemes), morphological and semantic-pragmatic indicators most often updated within the phrasemic thesaurus of the precedent text of the author's tale. This, in turn, is relevant both for further analysis of translation decisions (idiosyncrasies, translators’ preferences, their linguistic and cultural competence, background knowledge) and for reproduction of the symbolic content of fairy tale realis, semiosis of things, cultural artifacts.
